Commercial Vehicles Co:  at Oragadam.
08 July 08      A memorandum of understanding was signed on Monday between the State govt and Daimler Hero Commercial Vehicles Co for a Rs. 3,000 croe project to be implemented at the SIPCOT industrial park in Oragadam. The German co with colaporaton, will manufacture 70,000 commercial vehicles a year, will be established by 2010.  In a few years, the investment may go up to Rs. 4,000 crore. In the presence of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the MOU was signed by M.F. Farooqui, Industries Secretary Andreas Renschler, member of the Board of Managemnet of the Daimler AG, Sunil Kant Munjal, managing director of the Hero Corporate Services.

03 July 08      A port will be constructed with 1500 crore. will handle 250 lakh tonnes of cargo annually. Total 7,290 croe got under way on Wednesday with Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi laying the foundation stone for the projects at the Secretariat.  Among the present were Arcot N. Veeraswami, Electricity Minister. M.RK. Panneerselvam, Health Minister, Vellakoil M.P. Saminathan, Highways and Minor Port Minister k. Venkatapathy etc  
Ship Building Yard:  near Cuddalore.
03 July 08      The Silambimangalam ship building yard would have the capacity of 75,000 tonnes. Investment  of Rs. 1,000 crore, the yard will roll out its first ship by late 2010 or early 2011, according to C. Muthukumaraswamy, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Tamil Nadu Maritime Bard.  
Refinery project: near Cuddalore.
03 July 08      Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation will implement the refinery project in association with the Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd and a host of Companies. Estimate cost Rs. 4,790 crore, the refinery project, having a capacity of 60 lakh tonnes a year, will be completed in 33 months. It will be commissioned by 2011. 
Tamil Nadu takes IT dream to hinterland.
02 May 08      Tamil Nadu allots land to IT Companies in the Tire - II Cities after a long delay.
     The IT portfolio being headed by the CM himself has made the process of setting up state run IT Parks much easier and very efficient. Clearances for environmental impact assessment are also done very quickly.

In the Siruseri IT Park promoted by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) there are more than 60 IT and ITES companies. SIPCOT  has allocated land to TCS (70 acres), Xansa (27), Hexaware (27), Syntel (27), CTS (25), Patni (18), and Polaris (13).
  Beside ELCOT has allocated 80 acres to Wipro, 50 acres to HCL and 50 acres to Satyam Computer Services in Sholinganallur.
  The State is setting up new IT parks in Tiruchi (50 acres), Madurai (10 and 250 acres), Tirunelveli (400 acres), Coimbatore (12 acres), Salem (100 acres) and Hosur (19.5 acres).
 

Nissan, Renault to set up unit in Chennai.
23 Feb 08      In an equal joint venture agreement, Renault and Nissan have decided to invest Rs. 4,500 crore to set up an integrated greenfield automotive facility at Oragadam near Chennai.
    A memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard was signed with the Government of Tamil Nadu.  The project will come up on 678 acres and will provide vehicle production platforms for the two car-makers. It will also have powertrain facility. The plant will have an installed capacity of four lakh vehicles annually. The facility is expected to go on stream in 2010.  
    Senior Vice-President of Nissan Colin Dodge, said "it is a major investment by Nissan into India, next to China. Nissan will like this project to be a world class one and wants it to be a Nissan's export hub." The Oragadam plant would bring out compact cars initially into the market. He said both the companies would share facilities equally.
Elevated road to link War Memorial and Madhuravoyal Planned.
23 Feb 08      A 19.2 km long four lane elevated road to link War Memorial near the State Secretariat and Madhuravoyal will be laid at a cost of Rs. 1,500 crore, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T. R. Baalu said on Friday.
    Chief Minister M. Karunanaidhi would be laying the foundation stone for the project shortly, Mr. Baalu said. The project is to facilitate sppdier movement of cargo from Chennai port to different parts of Tamil Nadu. 
Satyam to open software development centre in Madurai
12 Nov 07        Satyam Computer Services, the Hyderabad based software company, will open a software development centre in Madurai.
      It has been allotted 50 acres under the Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) scheme, proposed on the university land on Theni road, according to Subu D. Subramanian, director and senior vice president (Manufacturing and Automotive Business Group).
     The Centre had given in principle approval for two SEZs in Madurai and for one each in Tirunelveli, Tiruchi, Salem, Hosur and Kancheepuram districts, which would yield a total investment of Rs. 3,000 crore for infrastructure projects alone.
     Satyam would build its own Chennai Campus at the ELCOT SEZ in Sholinganallur on the Rajive Gandhi road The first phase would be ready in June 2008. The new centre would facilitate Satyam Computer Services to increase its employee strength in Chennai to around 20,000 in the next three years.
Supercritical thermal power plant by 2011
27Oct07 <Click> A thermal power project with supercritical technology is to come up on a 900 acre "government poromboke" site at Udangudi in Tuticorin district.
The 2X800 MW project with a total capital outlay of about Rs. 8,500 crore will start functioning from 2011, increasing power availability in the state. 
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise Sontosh Mohan Dev and State Electricity Minister N. Veeraswami were among those present when the MoU was signed by B HEL Chairman and Managing Director Ashok K. Puri and TNEB Chairman Hans Raj Verma. The JVC is expected to be in place in place in about three months. The project work would commence shortly thereafter.

Photovoltaic Fab unit Planned

Orakkadam:  Chennai. 18 Sep 2007. Moser Baer Photo Voltaic plans a photovoltaic fab manufacturing unit in the Oragadam industrial area with an initial investment of Rs. 2,000 crore.
   The co enter the solar power generation business by manufacturing solar cells and modules.
   It has sought 250 acres, plus 50 acres for residential quarters. Initially, the state Govt has agreed to give it 120 acres. Moser Baer Managing director d
eepak Puri said" "We will start the work on this unit within one month from the date of allotment of land. The first product will be ready for launch within 15 to 18 months. We expect revenue of $1 billion in the first three and half years. Funding is not a problem, since Moser Baer has cash reserves of Rs. 1,000 crore."
   The unit provide employment to 4,000 people in the initial stage.

Political

Tamil Nadu benefited from favourable political dispensations in the past. To day, one of the largest contingents of ministers from any state in the UPA Govt is from Tamil Nadu.   And the dozen odd ministers, led by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, have worked towards driving foreign investement into the state.

Investment

Out of the total foreign investemnt (FDI) that flowed into India last year(2005), 9.12 per cent went to Tamil Nadu. The state registered an annual growth rae of 6.3 per cent during the '90s, ahead of 15 major states. In the past four months, over Rs. 2,234 crore have been invested in the state. The numbers are only increasing.

Job & Co

The global players to have invested here are Nokia, Flextronics, Hyundai, Dell, Ford, Royal Enfield and Samsung. Over eight lakh jobs are expected to be created by 2011. Moreover, it is also becoming the prefeered destination for back offices of the world. Standard Chartered, World Bank, Citibank, Sutherland Technologies, ABN Amro are some of the leading banks that have their back office operations here.

Plans

In chennai alone, there are plans for four multiplexes housing over 30 theatres, and half a dozen seven star hotels, including the Hilton, Glitzy shoopping malls such as the Chennai Citi Centre are show casing this new found prosperity.

Good infrastructure and the advantage of connectivity with ports, a well laid road network and numerous airportsare the key drivers of investment in the state.

IT

The top 10 Indian IT companies are operating from Chennai. More than 345 IT firms came up in Chennai last year and there are 1,427 firms now. Software exports from cennai last year stood at Rs 14,115 crore. There are new proposal for smaller cities like Tirunelveli and Salem, While IT giants are already opeining centres in other places like Coimbatore and Trichy.

Economy

The state has the fifth largest economy in the country and ranks second in per capita income. It is the first Indian state to have introduced the concept of universal midday meals and make computer ducation available in all govt higher secondary schools.

Education

There are more than 252 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu that churn out 79,000 engineers every year.  Free mid day meals, free text books, cloths and free bicycle for school children have raised the literacy rate to 73.4$

Women

There are are more than two million women self help groups which play a pivotal role in the administrative and financial sectors. Unlike other states, the delivery systems have been won praise.

Real Estate

Propped up by massive growth in other sectors such as IT, real estate is at an all time high. Rates have jumped up by 100 to 150 per cent.

Health

Infant mortality and death rates have declined indicating that primary healthcare has improved. High end medical care is attracting foreign patients, while leading players such as Apollo Hospitals are earning a fir share of their revenus.

Negative

The number of people below poverty line still stood at 140 lakh in 2004. The rate of unemployment in 5.25 per cent, against the national average 3.77 per cent. The chief minister recently launched a monthly stiend scheme for the unemployed to cover more than 2,06,766 registered beneficiaries across the state.
