Statement on the status of
Tamil as a living classical language
Let me state unequivocally that, by any criteria one may choose, Tamil is
one of the great classical literatures and traditions of the world. |

Tamil Language:
Tamil is a classical language and one of the mafor languages of the Dravidian language
family. Spoken predominantly by Tamil in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore. It has
smaller communities of speakers in many other countries. As of 1996, it was the eighteenth
most spoken language, with over 4 million speakers worldwide. It is one of the official
languages of India, Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. |
